Not a good experience

I was a client of Jan Bernstein. She did not listen to me as her client or pay attention to my needs, but had her own ideas and told me what to do. She had a very loud and abrasive manner with everyone involved, including me, those who tried to communicate with her on my behalf, and the opposing coun...sel. This made it difficult to communicate with her. I never felt like I had her support, and I was never informed about my rights. I was never updated on critical matters about my cace and when I asked her questions, she did not know the status of my case, while billing me for the calls. She prolonged proceedings focusing on petty matters, had me put together documents she never used while billing me, and served to make a difficult time extremely stressful for me. She did not pay attention to very important information I gave her. Looking back, I should have never have hired her. I am still dealing with the mess that she created.

True professional, real person

Jan is a superb matrimonial attorney: experienced, thoughtful, objective, confident and hands-on. I also find her to be personable, unpretentious and caring. She represented me in two divorces in Bergen County, over the past 15 years, spanning her time at Riker Danzig and now Sills Cummis & Gross. Th...e work involved all financial matters (alimony, child support, property distribution, retirement plans); custody was not in dispute. Jan coordinated well with other experienced professionals on my behalf, such as my estate planning attorneys (from another law firm) and managers from my employer firm (a private partnership). Jan is currently representing me in seeking a modification of alimony due to retirement, in which she prevailed against another highly respected matrimonial attorney in a hearing on a new interpretational question of law. Jan’s professionalism has been consistent in all of her work with me. It has also been apparent that Jan is held in the utmost high regard by colleagues and judges, including many mentees with whom she maintains positive relationships. She has my trust, confidence, admiration, and friendship.

Got the Job Done

I was very happy to have found Jan. I started with a different firm with a big-time reputation who had me hire an expensive accounting firm and billed me for work that I was doing myself. Jan respected my intelligence and my pocket book. She is no-nonsense - she was upfront and honest from the start.... She helped me figure out what I needed - not "deserved" - which allowed me to really prioritize. She is well-respected in the legal community, which is an often overlooked quality, but is very important. While I thought I needed more strategy from her, she represented me best when I trusted her. She stood up to my lawyer ex-husband and his TWO attorneys. My case was settled within 11 months of hiring her. I was pleased with the outcome which allowed me to provide a comfortable home for my children in our community and enough financial support to maintain their standard of living. I would recommend Jan to get the job done.

Fast, creative, smart, effective....

I disagree, wholeheartedly, with the first to reviews. I llllloooovvvveeee Jan! She was sensitive, competent, and effective with my case. And it wasn't an easy case – it was an ugly, convoluted mess that needed to be sorted within a very short time frame. She was professional, kept me up-to-date, ...explained things efficiently and she was able to reach a solution quickly to satisfy both parties in a very, very, very creative manner. Worth every cent. Would recommend Jan in an instant.

Words cannot express my gratefulness to Jan Bernstein

After recommendations from several good friends and interviewing other qualified attorneys to handle my complex case, I hired Jan. I trusted her from the moment I met her, and she came through in a way that can never be expressed. You get exactly what you pay for with Jan. Her team is amazing, never ...missed one single beat (and I could not afford not to). She is a true advocate in every respect of the word. Professional, tenacious, and tells it like it is. Exactly what I needed. She was worth every single cent, in gold. There are not enough words to thank her.
