Choose experience over book smarts/degree

I would suggest going with a real estate attorney who is older and wiser with more experience under their belt. There is a difference between "book smart" and "street smart" I had never sold a home before. Ms. Caplan didn't make me aware of the closing costs that would be incurred for selling... a home, until the day of the closing. She had emailed me requesting to let me know if I give my approval. When I saw the closing costs, I had issues with it and didn't want to give my approval. At that point she informed to me that it was already too late and she had already gotten the checks to get the process going. She informed me those were the regular costs to close. If I had been told that before, I would have never sold. She had put me under pressure to get to a notary and complete the process. When I reached out to my real estate agent that I had questions, I was told to speak with Ms. Caplan again. I was again told the closing costs were normal and was asked to finish the steps to complete the process. She went ahead without giving my consent and approval and that is why I am upset. I also became disappointed when I spoke to other attorneys who told me she should have never gotten the checks ready or out if I didn't give my approval or consent at the time, and also it wasn't "too late" if I wasn't comfortable with the closing statement. It would have been appreciated if I was informed way before of all the closing costs before the closing date. But most importantly, she should have never proceeded without my approval/consent first. I also don't understand why the final closing date happened several days after I was urged to get things done asap. I thought real estate attorneys were also part of the process to protect your interests. This didn't seem like the case because I wasn't happy with what I was told. She may have been knowledgeable with the basic process, but I guess some details or things got lost in translation. Real estate attorneys are supposed to protect their clients' interests. Shortly after attorney review, I didn't want to proceed with selling at I called Ms. Caplan at which point she had told me it was too late because attorney review had ended. She said if it was still in attorney review I could have backed out.

Review

Emily is very responsive and conscientious. However, she made multiple mistakes which resulted in a considerable loss in my case.
