Since joining RisCassi & Davis, P.C. in 1985, David Cooney has handled a wide range of personal injury and wrongful death cases, including truck and car accidents, workplace accidents and claims of medical malpractice. Over the years, he has been able to secure numerous multi-million dollar settlements and verdicts for his clients, in cases ranging from wrongful death claims brought against drunken drivers and negligent trucking companies, to brain injuries resulting from carbon monoxide poisoning or construction site accidents.
Regardless of the type of case, David focuses on the human aspect of the practice, so he can help his clients preserve their dignity as he works to obtain the justice they deserve.
David is a 1975 honors graduate of Rutgers College where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended the University of Connecticut School of Law receiving his J.D. in May, 1978. In 1998, David obtained an M.A. degree from Wesleyan University, where he studied history, politics and literature. After graduating from law school, he worked at a law firm in Hartford defending personal injury and asbestos claims. He joined RisCassi & Davis in June, 1985.
David and his wife Joan live in Bloomfield. They have five adult children and five grandchildren. They are both very active in their community and their church.
Since 1994, David has been certified in Civil Trial Advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. He was selected as an Advocate of the American Board of Trial Advocacy.
He has been listed as one of New England’s Super Lawyers since 2006 and in 2011 was designated as one of Connecticut’s Top 50 attorneys by New England Super Lawyers.
David served as President of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association from 2010-2011. He is co-chair of the association’s Continuing Legal Education Committee and serves on CTLA’s Board of Governors and the Executive and Medical Malpractice committees.
For ten years, David taught a course in Intensive Trial Advocacy at the University of Connecticut School of Law. In 2007, the law school honored David for his service to the school. In 2008, he was the co-recipient of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association’s T. Paul Tremont Award, acknowledging his commitment to the education of law school students.
David belongs to the American Association for Justice and the Connecticut and Hartford County Bar Associations. For over twenty years, he has been a frequent lecturer at seminars put on by the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association, discussing various aspects of litigation and trial practice. He was selected as a James W. Cooper Fellow of the Connecticut Bar Foundation in 2006 and is a member of the Roscoe Pound Foundation.
