Creativity is required to suit the needs of employee clients. Some clients need very narrow representation. Some may only need only advice or a negotiator. Some may need representation though full-blown litigation.

PROMOTING YOUR SAFETY-- FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE

I am a Vermont personal injury and employment lawyer.  I also work as an arbitrator and mediator.

Our firm, Rich Cassidy Law represents people, not businesses or institutions. We focus on personal injury litigation and employment law. We represent people who have been injured due to the fault of others and employees in disputes with their employers or former employers.

Why? We want to make a living doing work that is worthwhile. Early in my career, I represented all sides in many kinds of disputes. But I simply didn’t find it satisfying to represent insurance companies and big businesses. It is true that business must pay attention to the bottom line. But many companies don’t seem to care about anything else. They just want to resolve claims as cheaply as they can. For them, people’s troubles are just balance sheet issues.

Serving that narrow way of seeing the world is not how I want to spend my life.

Injured people really need help. You have medical bills to pay. You have lost wages and earnings. You have been in pain, and may still be in pain. You may have disabilities. You may have suffered the loss of a loved one.

Some employers treat their employees well. But many do not. Some employers seem to ignore the fact that hard working, loyal employees depend on their salaries and benefits to provide for their families and themselves.

Justice is not given; it is achieved. Without help from a competent, experienced lawyer, you may get nothing, or whatever pittance the insurance companies or employers choose to give you.

I've also worked throughtout my career to make the law work more fairly and effectively.

I am the immediate Past President of the Uniform Law Commission. I was appointed as a Vermont Member of the Uniform Law Commission in 1994. I served as a member of the Drafting Committee on the Model Punitive Damages Act, the Drafting Committee on the Revised Uniform Arbitration Act, the Drafting Committee on the Apportionment of Tort Responsibility Act, and Scope & Program Committee and he chaired the Drafting Committee on the Uniform Collateral Consequences of Conviction Act. I served as Secretary of the Commission from 2009 through 2011 and Chair of its Scope and Program Committee from 2011 through 2013. I chaired its Executive Committee from 2013 through 2015.

I represented the Vermont Bar Association in the American Bar Association House of Delegates from 1999 to 2005 and 2008 through 2015. I served as a member of the ABA Board Governors from 2005 through 2008. I am a former Chair of the ABA's Standing Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services.

I was a long-time member of the Vermont Board of Bar Examiners serving as both chair of the board and examiner from 1990 until 2004.

I am a former President of the American Counsel Association.

I write and speak regularly on legal topics.  I maintain a blog, On Lawyering, which provides news and commentary on the law and the culture of lawyers.

I have lectured on trial practice, employment, arbitration, mediation, and construction law subjects before the American Bar Association, the National Employment Lawyers' Association, the Vermont Bar Association, the Vermont Trial Lawyers Association, and the Vermont Employment Lawyers' Association.

I have been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers® and New England Super Lawyers® by his peers. (Listing in The Best Lawyers in America® or Super Lawyers® does not guarantee a desired result in a legal case or that listed lawyers are necessarily more skilled than lawyers who are not listed in such publications.)

I am a  1975 graduate of the University of Vermont and a 1978 graduate of Albany Law School. I served as law clerk to the Honorable Robert W. Larrow of the Vermont Supreme Court in 1978-79, and as Chief Law Clerk to Chief Justice Albert W. Barney in 1979-80 before entering private practice in 1980.

A South Burlington resident, I was a member of the South Burlington School Board for 12 years, and Chair the Board for 6 of those years. I also served as Chair of the Vermont Solid Waste and Air Quality Variance Board from 1993 through 2005.

When I am not practicing law or in a committee meeting, I enjoy reading, skiing, swimming, and rowing my Adirondack Guide Boat on Lake Champlain, and most of all, walking my dog, Baxter.

Review of Richard T. Cassidy
I have know Rich Cassidy for 25 years and have hired him on two occasions for legal matters. I have always found Mr. Cassidy to be knowledgeable, helpful, courteous, thoughtful and caring. I have also appreciated his candor when on one occasion, he told me that one issue was not worth pursuing. He is not one to run up the billable hours. Rich is polite but clearly expresses his opinion, backed up by years of experience. Rich is passionate about the law and compassionate as a person. Despite all his years of experience, he is not jaded. I strongly recommend consulting him if your legal issues fall under the areas that he practices.

Highly recommend
I came to Rich for help with an employment dispute and later a personal injury claim. Rich was a valuable advisor and an excellent advocate for me in these very difficult situations. He listened carefully and helped me map out multiple options, without pressure and with solid compassionate advice. He followed through, doing exactly what he said he would do and he (and his staff) could not have been more responsive. I felt respected and supported every step of the way, and I can't recommend him more highly.

Rich Cassidy is a true professional
Rich provided advice and counsel to my wife and I regarding an employment-related legal issue. It was a very stressful time for us, and we needed straight answers to complicated questions, we needed honest advice. Rich gave us the information that we needed to hear (not just what we hoped to hear) and he delivered it with compassion and heart. We trusted Rich, and his word. We followed his advice and everything worked out well. His support meant everything to my wife and I.

Patient, Supportive and Knowledgeable!
Rich did a wonderful job in representing me with a difficult employment case. He was thoroughly knowledgeable about the laws and rules for the specific issues. Rich provided excellent guidance for my decisions at each step of the process. I greatly appreciated his patient, calm approach. During the investigative stages, Rich was a great advocate during the conversations. We obtained the best possible solution / outcome because of Rich's knowledge and facilitation. In the end, I was happy with the final agreement.

Professional, personable, effective.
Mr. Cassidy’s expertise and professionalism added great value to my case. It is clear that he has a deep connection with making sure individuals are fairly represented, whether they are employees, nurses, disabled, minority, or otherwise. Mr. Cassidy is involved in a number of areas of law, which ultimately benefits his clients, and keeps his practice current and competitive. He was flexible in his scheduling, had great availability, and was easy to get ahold of. Mr.Cassidy knew when to speak when I was at a loss for words, knew when to turn the heat up when the need arose, and knew how to be demanding in a professional and appropriate way. Mr. Cassidy is a great listener who is easy to talk to. He does a great job explaining law jargon, your rights, and your options. Mr. Cassidy makes certain that you know that you are in charge, but also that the two of you will work as a team towards the best resolution for you. It was reassuring to know that Mr. Cassidy was prepared to represent me until the conclusion of my case, whether that meant over the next few weeks, months, or even years, he was willing to make that commitment to myself and my family. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Cassidy and his practice to friends, family, and acquaintances. He made me feel comfortable and confident, and was effective in reaching a settlement in a timely manner.

Heavy Hitter Employment-employee Attorney
I contacted Rich for an Employment-employee Attorney on the recommendation from a professional financial advisor. I did not any research prior to contacting Rich. It was not until later after I had my consultation with Rich did I find out that the Hoff Curtiss Firm is one of the best in the states. I had lost my job of 31 years. Rich did an excellent job representing me. He worked hard and spent hours reviewing and mediating my case to reach an amblicall resolution to my case. If you are looking for someone to represent you in an employment case. I highly recommend Rich Cassidy.

Client
It was great to work with Richard recently on an employment matter. He was very timely (even though he was out of the office), he was able to analyze what was important in the matter efficiently, and he was able to present me with my options in an unbiased and reasoned way. He was also able to convey some of the longer term consequences of my decision on how to proceed. It was all very helpful and I ended up taking all of his advise, including using specific language recommendations. And of coarse, there was a good outcome. M.R.

Workplace
Rich was exceptional. I utilized his expertise in dealing with a hostile work environment. He was readily available over several months and the outcome has been positive.

Workplace issues
This was my first experience utilizing the services of an attorney, and I felt I had no other avenue to pursue due to the hostile conditions in my place of work. I truly felt heard and affirmed, and was willing to heed the guidance I was given, although the suggested strategies put me at some risk. Rich was able to predict the long-range outcome of this process, and it has come to pass as he predicted. During many months, Rich was responsive to all my contacts with him, and I believe I would be in a very different (worse) place without his counsel.
