Jeff has been practicing trust and estate law in Ellsworth since 1985 and has been a lawyer for over 30 years. He is a graduate of Princeton University and Rutgers-Camden School of Law. He is admitted to the bars of Maine, New Jersey and the U.S. Supreme Court and is a member of the Maine and American Bar Associations and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
In 2009, Jeff was appointed to the new Maine Probate and Trust Law Advisory Commission (PATLAC) created by the Legislature. He was reappointed in 2013 and is currently the Chair of the PATLAC committee which is drafting a revised Maine Probate Code. In 2003 Jeff Chaired the Committee of lawyers and trust bankers which drafted the Maine Uniform Trust Code. As a result, the National Conference of Commissioners of Uniform State Laws recognized him in 2004 for “outstanding leadership and support of the Uniform Trust Code project.” Jeff is also the author of the chapter on Marital Deduction Planning in A Practical Guide to Estate Planning in Maine, published in 2012.
Throughout his career Jeff has received other national recognition as an estate planning, probate, and trust lawyer. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel (ACTEC) in 1990 where he is national Editor of the ACTEC State Surveys project and a member of three of national committees. Following a poll of Maine lawyers in 1995, Jeff was selected for inclusion in the directory “The Best Lawyers in America.” In 2007 he was voted by lawyers throughout the region to the first “New England Superlawyers” list for his expertise in both Trusts and Estates and Elder Law. America’s oldest lawyer-rating organization, Martindale-Hubbell has awarded Jeff an “Av” rating, described as the “highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards.” He has a rating of 10.0 on the Avvo site. The New England Bar Association recognized Jeff for his “personal contributions to the legal profession” in 2001.
Jeff has made many educational presentations about trust and estate law over the years, from local seminars for non-lawyers to national meetings of lawyers and trust bankers. He enjoys making such presentations and continues to do several each year.
Like all members of Jones, Kuriloff & Sargent, Jeff believes in giving back to his community. He was a Trustee and past Chair of the Maine Coast Healthcare Foundation, a founding member of the Maine Planned Giving Council and serves on the investment committee of his church. When his children were growing up he served as a scout leader, soccer coach, and swimming official. Jeff is a former director of the Katahdin Area Council, Inc. of the Boy Scouts of America and served two years as a delegate to the National Council of YMCAs of the United States.
