Terrible communication

I had to continually check in with him after the majority of my case was settled (and he was paid), terrible at responding, terrible at follow through. Never answers your call, or replies to email. Took another 3 years for him to finish my case. There are many lawyers out there, avoid this one at al...l costs.

Excellent, thorough, caring

I hired Steve Merritt November 2016 for a criminal defense case. He was prompt, organized, and very caring. He discussed with me in detail how the situation could be approached, and what the possible outcomes could be. I had a very positive outcome due to his professionalism and honesty with my ca...se. I rehired him to handle a petition to partition situation with a very difficult ex. While this is a long process that has not yet concluded, Steve has been just as thorough, caring, and professional as before. He researched several different approaches to my problem, decided on the best approach, discussed in detail with me how he came to his decision, and thus proceeded. He is responsive when I have a concern, and very kind and helpful regarding my financial situation. I also find his paralegal to be very kind and helpful.

Buyer beware!

I was quoted $1500 for my divorce. Once the divorce was done and a final bill received, I was being billed twice as much! I was told the case was more difficult than originally anticipated so the cost was more (never once was I informed during the process that it would cost me more). The paralegal.../office manager/wife is a trip to deal with. She is very manipulative in her behavior towards clients. IF you have hired this lawyer, do yourself a favor and keep ALL communications between you and the office as you may need them to prove your case in front of a judge.

Do not employ Steven Merrit if you wish to have progress .

I found name of Steven Merrit on web. I was doubt about him from the first look and his behavior when he promised a lot and jangled with legal terminology. But I still was not smart enough to employ him for my case about Constraction froud . It was big mistake: I payed upfront $5000 after her wife(... secretary ) promised me that he almost finished demand letter on behalf of my case. After long waiting for updating on my case and several my letters I received copy of demand letter that was pretended as was sent week before . It was sent ( if it was)- I doubt it) with out any request or notification or confirmation about sending . So I was upset that he does not follow our agreement to notify me about any spending such as 100-1000 dollars . Steven Merrit did not send me this letter for my consideration and confirmation, he did not notify me about spending on its preparation, he did not notify me that he "sent" the letter. On this point I request terminate our case against bed guy and return money back . I did not have respond for several my emails with the same request until I decided to contact authority about his own fraud . He was fast to respond and told that he is waiting for bill from private investigator. I did not ask any private investigator , I did not received from him any proposal about it and any possible cost of such survise . I still ask to return our money that was payed $5000 because even letter that he pretended to send was not undercurrent discussion and we do not agree on it . Now I am in process to file case against him to Caurt of Boston. You can read reviews of other his clients and se pattern in his actions and stile to still money from clients. So DO NOT even call him and DO not engage in the work with him. Otherwise you will be in battle with him for your time, hopes, money.. As I see he and his wife developed system to attract clients and after that do not fulfill any obligation, do not follow sing agreement , do not respond to reguests. It is terrible experience .

similar situations as the others on here

I payed him 1500 up front for my divoce/annulment in June 2014. Did not hear anything for months while he "prepare my case." When I did make contact he was usually doing something in his personal life in Maine. It is almost June 2015 and I have only been in front of a judge on one occasion. This init...ial date was part my doing because I filed on my own behalf before hiring him. I had to frequently threaten reporting him to the bar for him to respond to me and then I would finally hear back with a date of my next court appearance. I never received any of my documents in the mail during this one year of wasted time despite several requests. He never updated me and I had to take a last minute day out of work on more than one occasion only to get to court where he was seeming unprepared. He frequently would blame the opposing council for the complete wasted day. Excuse after excuse after excuse. Buyer beware......you get what you pay for! I too could go on for hours with examples of how my time was wasted. Additionally, I was unable to speak with opposing council throughout this process to figure out what was going on either. Apparently it is against the rules while I technically "had an attorney." If you are reading this because you are having a similar experience you should seek alternate council sooner rather than later. I allowed this to go on much longer than necessary because I already paid him and didn't want to fork out additional money to someone else. Don't wind up like me and be back a square one almost one year later.
