Dont think cos is abandoned unless you cannot prove you will be in the US on Oct 1. If your H1 is denied or visa stamping refused, your L1 status...

Yes you can stay till the H1 is valid. Whether you file another 485 or restart the green card depends on the reason the 485 was denied.
