Most of my practice is in appellate law, primarily appealing Murder convictions. I also handle motions for new trial. I have extensive experience in Massachusetts' appellate courts. See my webpage for actual video of me at the Supreme Judicial Court.
I handle all kinds of accident and injury claims...such as motor vehicle accidents, construction site accidents, medical malpractice, dog bites, product liability, slip and fall, and wrongful death. I love trying cases if the insurer won't settle.
I've been handling accident and injury claims (personal injury law) for 30 years. I received my training at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. Having learned the secrets of how insurers deny claims or try to settle for pennies, I ventured out. In 1999 my partner and I started Bates & Riordan, LLP. We've had great results for our injured clients. Either the insurer is going to make a fair settlement on our cases, or we'll take the case to trial and the jury will order them to pay. On our injury cases, you don't owe us anything up front. We get paid when the insurer pays.
I also have a substantial appellate practice. I was first exposed to appellate law when I worked at the Rhode Island Supreme Court. Since then I've loved doing appeals. Most of my appeals concern convictions for 1st Degree Murder, but I also accept other serious felony cases. In addition, I accept related post-conviction matters such as motions for new trial. These cases are handled on a flat-rate basis.
