Apparently not for marginalized individuals

Meara’s firm was obtained to represent me as the buyer in a real estate transaction concluded in early June, 2025. I was going to have to pay a fee to Liberty Bank for him whether I used him or not. Meara and his associate, Attorney Barnes, failed to represent my interests in the case, repeatedly... encouraging me to push back my closing date as an accommodation the seller. Meara gave me potentially detrimental legal advice, namely to overstay my apartment lease end date. While not illegal to overstay a lease in this state, this advice had potential negative legal consequences for me . I am concerned that Meara discriminated against me based on ageism, sexism, anti-semitism, and/or a perception of disability. Meara refused to turn over my client file containing communication between him/Barnes/counsel for the seller. I have the right to access this information. At my closing, Meara was intentionally belittling me. Example: “If you don’t pay your mortgage, the bank will take your property.” My real estate agent later noted, “He (Meara) would belittle you, then try to catch my eye like he wanted me in on the joke.”

Closing attorney

James did an excellent job helping me close on my house. He was very timely with returning documents and motivating the seller's attorney to actually do his job. I would hire him again in an instant.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
