About me

Rebecca J. Benson is Of Counsel to Margolis & Bloom, LLP.  Since 1991, her practice has been focused on long-term care planning, estate planning for beneficiaries with special needs, and guardianship and conservatorship.  She is also an experienced advocate for the rights of nursing home and assisted living residents.

Rebecca serves on the SJC’s Mental Health Legal Advisors Committee, the Steering Committee of the Women’s Bar Foundation’s Elder Law Project, and a state-wide task force of advocates to strengthen regulatory protections for nursing home and assisted living residents.  She is the author of several works on estate planning and elder and disability law, including chapters in Thomson/RIA's Estate Planning Law and Taxation and MCLE’s Estate Planning for the Aging or Incapacitated Client.  She frequently presents seminars on elder law and disability planning for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education.  She has also taught at the University of Massachusetts Boston’s Gerontology Institute, and is the author of Check Your Rights at the Door: Consumer Protection Violations in Massachusetts Nursing Home Admission Agreements.

Rebecca is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Academy of Special Needs Planners, the Massachusetts Guardianship Association, and the Massachusetts Bar Association.  Before joining Margolis & Bloom, Rebecca was of counsel to Cohen & Oalican, LLP.  She also worked as a staff attorney for the Senior Citizens’ Law Project of Cambridge & Somerville Legal Services and an associate with Goulston & Storrs in Boston.  She received her law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School and her B.A. summa cum laude and M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.
