African-American make Defendant charged with aggravated assault and battery and witness intimidation after incident with Caucasian girlfriend wherein her wrist was broken. Girlfriend testified at tria ... l, and admitted to lying on a prior occasion during cross-examination. Defense argued self-defense. Over defense objection, judge allowed in evidence of prior acts of violence by the Defendant on the girlfriend. Despite that, Jury deliberated for 1 hour before returning Not Guilty verdicts on all counts.

14 year-old defendant charged with 3 other youth of felony assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon in connection with beating wherein victim had jaw broken in two places. All defendants ind ... icted and proceeded against as Youthful Offenders (opening them up to any sentence allowed for an adult under the law). Thorough pretrial investigative efforts uncovered witness who would testify favorably for defendant. Prosecution's case fell apart on the day of trial as the victim and prosecution witnesses changed their stories when confronted with defense witness' account. Prior to day of trial, all District Attorney had offered was an extended commitment to Department of Youth Services to age 21. All charges dismissed against the defendant on day of trial.
