My ex abandoned me and our cat more than three years ago. Two years after disappearing and ghosting me, the ex suddenly reappeared and demanded that I give her the cat. This was six months into Covid and I had barely left my house for six months and the cat was my only and dearest companion. So I told the ex, "No thanks."
In response to my reply, she ended up suing me for the cat and $25k in pain and suffering damages, plus her legal fees.
I talked to a couple of lawyers, but neither of them would take the case, saying that the case was unwinnable for me because the receipt for the cat was in my ex's name. They told me that I should just give my cat to my ex and adopt a new cat. I didn't want to do that, however, because I love my cat dearly.
I came across Jeremy Cohen via Googling for lawyers that specialize in pet law in Massachusetts. He told me that the case wasn't so cut and dry as the other lawyers had insisted. He said, for instance, that he knew all sorts of techniques that could tie up the case in the courts for a couple of years, and that in all likelihood, these endless roadblocks would cause my ex to give up the suit and just adopt a new cat instead. Especially since during all this time, I would still be in possession of my cat. Most people would not be so patient, nor want to devote so much time, energy, and money to retrieve a cat that they hadn't seen in a couple of years and now wouldn't see for a couple more years, at best.
Jeremy was exactly right. It took a while, but my ex eventually dropped the suit against me, and now I no longer have to worry about having my beloved cat taken from me.
Jeremy represented us at a dangerous dog hearing for our Staffordshire Terrier brought by a neighbor. DO NOT GO TO A HEARING WITHOUT BOSTON DOG LAWYERS. There were 2 incident with the neighbor's 2 large dogs that were over 1 year apart, a complaint that our boy bit the neighbor during the first incident in the hand and attacked his dogs. The Town made several errors issuing the date and time of our hearing and the first hearing was missed without our input. Jeremy stopped that hearing after it closed while the Board of Selectmen had already found for the complainant and deemed our boy Dangerous. They were administering all of the allowed restrictions. Two weeks later, we had our hearing and Jeremy not only educated the board, but explained why our boy was not Dangerous, explaining how the neighbor placed his hand inside our boy's mouth in an attempt to separate the 2 dogs resulting in an injury to his hand. Our hearing ended in a nuisance label since he had escaped several times and the only restriction was to maintain the fenced area he is kept. NO ONE should attend these hearings with Boston Dog Lawyers to represent them and remove the risk of having their dog labeled a Dangerous Dog which follows them for life and hold many restrictions.
We represent people bitten by dogs AND defend dog owners whose pets have injured people. We defended so many bite cases that we know how best to pursue personal injury cases too. We defend dogs and ownersrs at dangerous and nuisance hearings.
We work on pet custody disputes, wrongful pet injury and death due to the negligence of a veterinarian, boarding facility or groomer and have had success pursuing emotional distress damages for pet owners. Tell us we can't, and we will.
BOSTON DOG LAWYERS, BECAUSE IT'S TIME TO BARK BACK!
WE HAVE A TEAM OF LAWYERS, VETERINARIANS, CLAIMS ADJUSTERS, INVESTIGATORS, TRAINERS AND BEHAVIORISTS TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF PET OWNERS AND VICTIMS OF DOG BITES.IF A DOG BITES, WE HANDLE IT FOR THE INJURED PLAINTIFF OR THE DOG AND OWNER BEING ACCUSED. THROUGH 500 CASES, WE CAN DEFEND DOGS AT HEARINGS AND DOG OWNERS WITH OR WITHOUT INSURANCE AND STILL MAKE GREAT ARGUMENTS FOR VICTIMS OF DOG BITES. WE LEARNED THE DOG WORLD AND WE'RE HERE FOR THE DOG WORLD.WE FIGHT FOR PET CUSTODY RIGHTS & PURSUE WRONGFUL PET INJURY AND DEATH CASES. IT'S TIME TO HOLD VETS, BOARDING FACILITIES & GROOMERS ACCOUNTABLE.
WE'VE WON WITH CLAIMS FOR EMOTIONAL DISTRESS DAMAGES. THE RIGHTS OF PET OWNERS ARE NO LONGER HIDING IN A NEGLECTED AREA OF THE LAW. BDL IS HERE.
We receive calls daily from pet owners around the country who need to determine if they have an issue that can be addressed by a lawyer and in the court system. Our staff is always willing to listen to your pet's story and look for avenues to assist. We have handled more than 500 cases in the last 6 years. Our lawyers are in court multiple times per week and we are winning cases at a great rate. We also lose cases but only after exhausting battles waged for your rights as a pet owner. We are seeing judges starting to accept our arguments in favor of awarding emotional distress damages for pet owners who witness an injury to their dog.
Pet custody disputes among people who were previously in a relationship together are becoming quite common. At Boston Dog Lawyers we believe there are dozens of ways to prove ownership. The person who bought the dog is not necessarily the sole owner. Neither is the person who licensed the dog or took the pet to the vet. We dig in on each case to learn the facts that we can rely upon to prevail under the existing law. Our arguments are also centered on looking at what is in the best interests of your pet. While the judiciary is not necessarily allowed by law to consider those arguments, we make them as much as we can.
It is also time to hold people accountable who harm our pets. Groomers, walkers and veterinarians do not choose to make mistakes, but it is now time to hold them accountable when they do. The costs of care are growing and our investments in our pets are too. There are many times where pet owners should be reimbursed and are not. We initially suggest reasonable exit strategies for these wrongdoers and will certainly file suit when necessary. Our motto is It's Time to Bark Back and it is through the courage and trust of our clients that we are affecting change every day in the way our pets are handled by the people we pay to care for them and by the clerks and judges who are hearing our arguments.

Life-changer!
Jeremy is the absolute kindest soul with a great mission. Once contacted, he took action right away and walked alongside us during the entire process. He answered all of our questions and always made us feel welcome. He brought calm during the storm. We cannot say enough good things.

Man's second best friend.
I recommend attorney Jeremy Cohen. He responded in an extremely timely matter, he is a very knowledgeable, trustworthy person. There is no other attorney that will work as hard for you. I used Jeremy for a Dangerousness hearing, he is a wonderful attorney I could not have been happier with the results.

Empathetic and helpful consultation
I consulted with Jeremy regarding an Emotional Support Animal dispute with my landlady. He confirmed my suspicion that certain terms she was proposing were likely non-compliant with the law, and encouraged me to try working it out with her directly first, while explaining how the process would work if I needed to hire him. I almost hired him later when I continued to have trouble, but ultimately did not need to when the landlady started complying with the law.
He was empathetic throughout the whole process and should I run into any further animal disputes, he will be my first call.

Sharp
We hired Attorney Jeremy M. Cohen to deal with a nuisance dog issue we had with our neighbor. He was hindered in his abilities to assist us at first since it was initiated right before the Pandemic. The town offices were closed. As the town started to open, he communicated his objections to how the town was handling it and referenced state law in an effort to educate the town with how their bylaws were not in compliance. He requested hearings in accordance with our citizen rights. The town has been egregiously incompetent in the resolution of assisting with the issue and had a dog catcher decide the fate for us being the harassed family. Our decision to bring the case to Superior Court has been tabled for now due to a backlog in the court system and we are exploring another legal avenue. We found him witty, highly intelligent, incredibly effective with very few words, conscientious of his fees to his clients and a genuine desire to solve the issue for his clients. He cares about not only the people involved but also the animals. He recognizes that bad behavior with pets could be a sign of abuse and neglect from their owners. We would highly recommend him to assist with representing anyone who has a dog issue. We felt total confidence in his ability to represent us and we will not hesitate to hire him in the near future if the other resolutions we are pursuing do not resolve the issue.

Ms. Brooklyn's Mom
In 2010 my mother became deathly ill and she needed to re home her dog of 5 years, Ms Brooklyn a chihuahua mix and not so nice. Her wish was for me to take Ms Brooklyn.
After my mother passed I became extremely attached to Ms Brooklyn and she to me. We were bosom buddies and she wouldn't share me with anyone. It was a loving bond like no other.
She was great company and I loved her to the moon and back.
Unfortunately Ms Brooklyn was poisoned by a exterminating company scheduled for an apartment above me but they were given my apartment by mistake. I was away working while they entered my home and left several bait traps that Ms Brooklyn found interesting. Needless to say a week later Ms Brooklyn passed due to rat poison. It was the most painful experience and I thought I would go insane. The pain was at times unbearable and I just remember feeling so much anger and loss. I missed work and my health fell tremendously I was lost and didn't know what to do.
I found Jeremy on the internet I believe and reached out to him and told him of my nightmare. Right away he understood my feelings and wanted to help me. He explained that the law considered Ms Brooklyn as property rather than a family member and that tore at my heart. Jeremy went onto explain that he was going to do everything possible to make the landlord and the company liable for their actions. It was a long road with lots of disappointments first the landlord wasn't responsible and then the exterminating company wasn't responsible. This went on for months and Jeremy kept the course and fought for Ms Brooklyn and he won her case. They were responsible for her death and they paid. Not a great deal but they paid property worth.
At that time I was motivated to move to create laws that pets were not property but in fact family members and should be treated as such.
Today I have two new fur babies Ms Darlyn and Clara-belle, both gifts as a result of a feature story on the news arranged by Jeremy to get Ms Brooklyn's story out.
Donations and contributions have been made by both myself and Jeremy in memory of Ms Brooklyn.
May she rest well till we meet again.
Would I recommend Jeremy Cohen?
Absolutely without a doubt. His heart is true and he genuinely cares not only for your fur love but for the whole family.
Thank You Again!

Knowledgeable and compassionate
Animal law is fraught with emotion. My puppy had been mauled to death by a group of dogs and Jeremy helped me accomplish all of my goals while also being a trusted advisor and, I would say, friend. His experience and knowledge of this highly specialized type of law is unparalleled in Massachusetts.

So glad I found him...so glad someone like this even existed! My dog was injured very badly at a doggy daycare facility because of their negligence. Jeremy was able to help us navigate our rights as pet owners and hold them accountable. Easy to communicate with, and just a nice person to deal with. Extremely fair and practical.
