Providence was a center for early American revolutionaries. At the Old State House on Benefit street, the Rhode Island General Assembly officially ended their allegiance to the British Empire on May 4th, 1776.

Rhode Island itself was a hotbed of early resistance against the British Empire. The first open act of rebellion occurred in Newport, Rhode Island, when the inhabitants burned the revenue sloop "Liberty" in 1769.
