We had a consultation with this lawyer in 2009. We were given a list of supposed LGBT friendly that listed a lawyer who shared his office address, he answered the phone and said that she was not available, he said that he was LGBT friendly, we explained our case and he said "yes come in for a consultation it's a $300 fee". Because he shared the same office we believed him to be LGBT friendly. Upon arrival he was on the phone and told me to sit down. I paid him the $300 and explained the desperate case we were in. As a bi-national LGBT couple, discriminated by DOMA and that we needed a lawyer at our hearing. He came across as arrogant, he then tried to show some compassion saying his brother was gay. He then said "What was your partner thinking bringing you into the country and disobeying the law of the land". My US spouse of 10 years and I entered legally. But because of DOMA we were not given the exact same rights as conventional couples. Bart was defending the descrimination of DOMA by his comments. He did nothing to suggest arguing this in court or trying like so many other lawyers we met to use this as an argument to drop removal proceedings against the foreign spouse, to which they have been successful. He then went on to say that I would most likely have to post "bail" at my hearing, that I could be locked up. Etc etc. He then went on to say that the "officer who granted you a visa to enter will be reprimanded for their misconduct". This "lawyer" Mr Bart Stroupe is clearly not LGBT friendly, he was more on the side of ICE and DOMA. His attitude and lack of experience in LGBT immigration cases can cause harm to future clients, especially binational clients. He was arrogant, and "took pride" in photocopying our documents to add to his "little collection" of cases. He unprofessional, and he wants your money. If you are LGBT we highly advise you avoid him. We have filed a complaint with the board and we intend to get our money back. We now know of 4 different things he could've done to help us, he never mentioned one.
