Jennifer “Jenni”Helland is one of our firm’s seasoned family law attorneys. Jenni assists our domestic relations clients in cases ranging from divorces and child custody to dependency and neglect matters. Jenni has a passion for working with families and advocating for her clients and brings her therapeutic background to our practice.
Prior to joining Black & Graham, Jenni worked as an Associate Attorney at The Gasper Law Group, PLLC as a family law and dependency and neglect attorney. Jenni’s experience and deep understanding of family law, to include her familiarity with multiple local experts, allowed her to work complex custody and property matters, with great results for her clients.
Prior to that Jenni served as a Deputy District Attorney for the 4th Judicial District in El Paso County, Colorado. While working as a district attorney, Jenni led the Fast Track domestic violence program. Her experience allows her to educate clients on the process and complexity of issues involved in family and criminal matters where domestic violence is an issue. Jenni’s experience as former prosecutor allows her to bring significant trial experience to every case she takes on.
Jenni is a graduate of The University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minnesota. Keeping in the nationally recognized St. Thomas tradition in their commitment to public service, Jenni has dedicated ten years to public service primarily with assisting juveniles and their families. Prior to law school Jenni assisted in writing and implementing a district-wide truancy policy and program for local school districts in Minnesota and served as a Behavioral Specialist.
Locally, Jenni has worked for Savio House and Chins Up, as a Multisystemic Therapist. While in law school Jenni wrote a graduate thesis entitled “Best Practices in Juvenile Court Dispositions for the Best Interests of the Youthful Offender and Community.” Her work focused on the success of evidence-based therapies within the Colorado Juvenile Offender system. In addition, Jenni served as a student attorney in dissolution and protection order matters, assisted in a juvenile drug court program, and acted as a student attorney for the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center serving as a guardian ad litem.
Jenni has extensive trial experience as a former prosecutor and as a family law attorney. She has completed over 100 trials. Jenni has also received additional training in Domestic Mediation recently completing a 40 hour course on Domestic Mediation. Jenni is a dedicated advocate and continues to represent our clients in high conflict family and children matters as well as high asset cases.
