Can FPL Shut off power in a home with 3 small children, my girlfriends husband died a week ago and he hadn't paid the bill,
She didn't know he hadn't paid the bill among other bills he hadn't paid, FPL won't work with her as far as payments, although she wasn't left much in her checking account either by him.
In addition to contacting FPL and hoping for a compassionate resolution, if your friend is a member of a church she might see if there is some temporary assistance available from the congregation. She needs to prioritize her necessities and may need to seek assistance from multiple sources. The Salvation Army, YMCA, and other non-profits may be able to help out. Families First of Palm Beach County, and many other non-profits in your area exist. You can do a google search for ones that might be able to assist.
Also, find out if her husband was a member of any unions, professional organizations, or fraternal organizations (Moose Lodge, Masons, Elks, Civitan, etc) these organizations will usually help out widows/widowers of their members. If the husband was a veteran there may also be assistance there. These groups do not always act immediately, but she should at least consider them if he was a member. She should not be afraid to ask for help.
For long term assistance, if the children were fathered by the deceased your friend should file claims with the Social Security Administration. Good luck to your friend.

I am unaware of any requirement for FPL to keep the electric on, but like the previous lawyer said, the best thing is to call and ask for an extension or other options.

Call FPL and explain the situation. Maybe you can work out a payment plan. However there is no legal right to utilities, if you don't pay they can shut you off.
