EXPERIENCE
Marla Grossman is known as one of the nation's preeminent intellectual property and technology lobbyists. While Ms. Grossman has earned a reputation of providing valuable representation to Fortune 500 companies, she has developed a wide network of contacts in the Washington DC community and across the country that allows her to serve a diverse portfolio of clients.
The topical matters on which she focuses include intellectual property (copyrights, patents and trademarks), technology, trade, First Amendment rights, piracy, Internet gaming, entertainment, tax and pharmaceutical issues. Whether the objective is to advance a client's business interests or to solve a particular problem, Ms. Grossman has extensive experience in the formation and execution of productive, cost-effective strategies.
Ms. Grossman has been featured in the Washington Business Journal: “Women Who Mean Business: Honoring the Region’s Most Influential Business Women” (November 2004), also (April 2001), the Washingtonian magazine: "Women to Watch: Women Under 40 Who are Beginning to Make Their Mark on Washington" (September 2001) as well as in the New York Times (March 20, 2000); National Journal (September 2008); Fast Company Magazine (June 2000); CIO Magazine (July 2000), Bethesda Magazine (December 2007) and several other publications. She was also a Working Woman Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards nominee in 2001.
PRIOR EXPERIENCE
From 2003 – 2008, Ms. Grossman ran the Grossman Group, which focused on intellectual property and technology government relations matters.
Prior to that, Ms. Grossman was a partner at the law firm of DLA Piper and before that at the law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand. At Verner, Liipfert, Ms. Grossman headed the Internet Ventures Practice Group.
From 1997-1999, Ms. Grossman served as minority counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee, where she was instrumental in the development of policy positions and legislative initiatives for the ranking Democrat and current Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Patrick Leahy, on issues of intellectual property, electronic commerce, Internet usage, entertainment, technology and pharmaceuticals. Specifically, Ms. Grossman helped coordinate legislative activities for Senator Leahy on the following measures that were enacted into law:
§ Digital Millennium Copyright Act (P.L. 105-304);
§ Copyright Term Extension Act (P.L. 105-298);
§ No Electronic Theft Act (P.L. 105-147);
§ Copyright Clarification Act (P.L. 105-80);
§ Trademark Law Treaty Implementation Act (P.L. 105-304);
§ Domain Name Amendment (P.L. 105-305);
§ Plant Patent Amendments Act of 1998 with Access to Electronic Patent and Trademark Information Amendment (P.L. 105-289); and
§ U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Reauthorization Act, Fiscal Year 1999 (P.L. 105-358).
In 1996, Ms. Grossman served as Assistant Director of Public Liaison and Director of Law Enforcement Outreach for the Clinton/Gore campaign. Her efforts helped secure, for the first time in history, the endorsement of every major law enforcement organization for a Democratic presidential and vice presidential candidate.
From 1993-1996, Ms. Grossman worked an associate in the Legislative Practice Group of the law firm Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand.
PRESENTATIONS AND SEMINARS
Ms. Grossman has lectured extensively on intellectual property, technology and entertainment issues and has been a speaker at the annual conventions of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the American Business Women's Association as well as at meetings and conferences of the Electronic Commerce Forum, the International Trademark Association, the eBusiness Tour, PR Pros, the Asia Pacific Legal Institute, the Information Industry Association, the Office of the State Council on Intellectual Property Executive Conference for the People's Republic of China, the biannual "Copyright Office Speaks" Symposium, and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman’s “CEO Chick Chat” Series.
She served as a guest lecturer at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government from 1995 – 2000 and was awarded a “Certificate of Distinction in Teaching” from Harvard University in 1992.
OTHER INFORMATION
Ms. Grossman currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Yale Club of Washington DC and is the Yale Alumni Fund Chair of Agents for the Class of 1990.
