Kyle Courtenay Velte

Kyle Velte, a partner at Reilly Pozner, focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation. Ms. Velte represents corporations and individuals in cases involving a wide range of disputes. Notably, Ms. Velte helped a major university defend claims stemming from Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and she defended a leading Colorado oil and gas company in a class action royalty dispute. She also successfully represented a local family after they sold their business to two private equity investment firms in a case involving a contractual dispute. In addition to her diverse practice, Ms. Velte devotes a significant amount of time to pro bono and volunteer work. Currently, she is working with the Colorado Lawyers Committee to challenge the Colorado school finance system in a lawsuit that asks to enforce the state constitutional right to a "thorough and uniform" system of free public education for Colorado children.  Also, as a cooperating attorney with the San Francisco-based National Center for Lesbian Rights, Ms. Velte successfully aided a non-biological mother in a custody dispute involving a lesbian couple. Ms. Velte's pro bono representation of the non-biological mother resulted in visitation rights for her client, and it further solidified good case law on "psychological parenthood" in Colorado. Ms. Velte also enjoys involvement in the legal community outside of the courtroom.  In 2011, Ms. Velte became an Adjunct Professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She teaches a seminar titled “Sexual Orientation and the Law”. For the second year, she was invited to speak on a panel for diverse law students in Colorado, and she has acted as a scoring panelist for the Colorado Mock Trial State Tournament.  She is also involved with the Colorado Center for Inclusive Excellence's Recruiting working group. Ms. Velte served as a board member of the GLBT Community Center of Colorado for many years. Recently, she was appointed to the board of the Colorado GLBT Bar Association and is the Co-Chair for the Colorado Pledge to Diversity.  Prior to joining Reilly Pozner, Ms. Velte gained research and writing experience by completing two judicial clerkships. She holds a postgraduate law degree from Harvard Law School and a law degree from American University. During law school, Ms. Velte gained recognition as the 1999 Washington College of Law Journal of Gender and The Law Award Winner, as well as the Washington College of Law Mussey Prize Winner. She also received the National Association for Public Interests Law Exemplary Public Service Award Winner.
