Kathy Sherman employs a passion for advocacy, a keen intellect, broad industry experience, and a technical background to obtain consistently positive results for her clients. Throughout her legal career, Kathy has practiced in the areas of criminal defense, business litigation, civil rights litigation, and intellectual property litigation at the trial level but is currently exclusively focused on criminal defense on the appellate level.
Kathy’s unique path to practicing law has provided a wealth of experiences that enrich her practice and afford her an extraordinary perspective on her cases and clients. With an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Kathy joined the Silicon Valley workforce nearly four decades ago. After enjoying a successful career in the computer industry as a Software Development Engineer, Software Project Manager, and Sales Representative in a variety of high-tech companies including Hewlett Packard, Kathy turned her attention to raising her children. During that time, she authored a number of non-fiction articles and essays, and a book, A Housekeeper Is Cheaper Than a Divorce: Why You CAN Afford to Hire Help and How to Get It. (Free PDF of book available upon request.) Kathy then entered law school as a “mature” student, graduating summa cum laude.
Before opening her own practice, Kathy practiced law at Berliner Cohen, LLP, in San Jose, California. Her caseload included complex commercial litigation, white collar criminal defense, and intellectual property litigation. Prior to her work in a private law firm, Kathy served as a research attorney for the San Mateo County Superior Court, a contract attorney for a criminal defense firm, and a law clerk in the Santa Clara and Santa Cruz County District Attorneys’ Offices.
Kathy is admitted to practice before all federal and state courts in California, as well as the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Kathy thrives on complex cases because they allow her to combine her passion for oral and written advocacy with her enthusiasm for technical detail and analysis.
