If it is that bad keep calling DCF until they get involved.

Question not clear. If the son is a ward and the father is the guardian then you cannot just go and take him

Kids can't really choose, however if things are this bad then you should file a petition to change custody with the court.

Not much you can do here. If the kid is staying at your home you have insurance that would cover a slip and fall or injury, etc.
