Heather is a great choice for an attorney!

Heather supported me during difficult moments and helped me improve a challenging child custody case. I specifically appreciated her responsiveness, guidance and communication throughout the process. She even improved the communication with the opposing counsel. Thank you Heather.

Not worth the money

I hired this firm to handle a custody situation with my son in which I moved to a different city than his father but was still in the same county. I initially had primary custody and did all of the work as the primary parent- none the less my ex filed for full custody. It was supposed to be a hearing... for a school decision (my son was starting kindergarten) but soon turned into a full blown custody hearing where I was in danger of losing all parental rights and only getting 50% custody. This firm did nothing to help me keep primary custody. They consistently told me that I was wrong for moving to a better area for my son because “I had no valid reason to move” and that the court would never give me full custody because of that. During my custody battle I had various lawyers show up to my conciliation hearings unprepared and asking me simple questions such as, what my sons name is, while we were waiting to go inside. I felt that they were extremely unfocused and were unwilling to put in any effort into actually winning my case but had no problem charging an exorbitant amount of money for their half hearted services. The only reason I’m giving two stars is because they managed to file paperwork in a timely manner.

It is unfortunate that this client feels this way and I am sorry for that. Many times in custody situations, when clients do not contact their attorneys before moving 40+ minutes from the other parent, it looks bad in the courts eyes especially when the other parent lives in the better school district. I always tell my clients that if they are planning on moving that they need to move to an area that does not hinder the other parents custodial time and that if possible to stay in the same school district or if moving to a better school district to keep travel time within 20 minutes in traffic. Pennsylvania Courts feel that shared custody is in the children's best interest whenever it is possible. The courts frown upon parents who unilaterally move to an area where time of travel interferes with the other parents custodial rights. I would never tell a client that they would be in danger of losing their parental rights unless they were putting the child in danger, certainly not for moving. Many times, it is the case that a parent is only going to receive 50% custody because that is what Pennsylvania believes is in the child's best interest if there are no issues with either parent that hinders their ability to care for their child. It is not what clients want to hear but I only tell my clients the truth. Part of my responsibility is to give my client reasonable expectations of what the outcome of a trial would be once we have conciliated with the Judge and they have spoken their opinion on the case. I fight for my clients 100% but I do not want to simply take peoples money and take the case to trial if it is a case that is going to end 50/50 - that would be doing my client a disservice.

No moral compass

I hired Heather and I had a mountain of safety concerns regarding my then 2 year olds father. Had she done her job with any conscious whatsoever we never would have endured 2 years of sheer hell. She was directly responsible for my child’s father getting unsupervised visitation. Should never have hap...pened.

We have gone through our client files and cannot possibly figure out who this might be. If this is a past client I would ask that they reach out to me directly at [email protected] to discuss their case. I certainly try to do everything that can be done in accordance with the law to fight for my clients and their children when I am retained to do so. Please see my other 5 star reviews in custody matters.

Child Custody

I would highly recommend you hire Heather Schmidt. She is tough and smart. She fought for me and won. I now have shared custody of my son even though his mother tried every trick in the book to try to discredit me, even filing false charges against me. Heather was able to convince the judge that thes...e allegations were false through her expertise at cross-examination. Hire her, she will really fight for you too!

Attorney

Heather is the Shark! She has been very aggressive when needed and when appropriate. She has listened to my needs and concerns as the client, but also has been able to balance my requests, yet be diligent in looking out for my best interests as my attorney. I can't say enough because I was in a ma...jor, at least in my terms, a major custody battle and she prevailed or rather pulled through for me and my son! I can't thank her enough and spread the good word about Heather and her level of knowledge and expertise in family law regarding divorce and custody. It just flows and comes naturally for Heather-there is no hesitation! She knows her stuff! I don't believe I would be where I am today without Heather-I meant this! These words are expressed with the sincerest gratitude!
