I-797 says "The above application/petition has been received by our office and is in process." Does this mean it is approved?

No. You will get an I-797 notifying that it is approved or denied. You are not authorized to work until your work permit is approved.

You should definitely file. It will give you work authorization and should not affect your residence process at all.
