I have practiced extensively in Criminal Defense, including DUI, domestic violence, probation violations, and traffic offenses. I have done five trials, including a felony trial. I have successfully challenged states' in suppression hearings and gotten numerous charges dismissed before trial.

Family 40%

I have handled dissolutions, legal separations, changes to decrees including parenting plan and child support modifications. I work to find resolution, but I will fight for your interests when it's needed.

Civil Rights 20%

This is a newer area for me, except that constitutional concerns have always been a part of my criminal defense practice. I am also concerned with the civil rights of prisoners and of the LGBT community.

Not a good lawyer! Zero stars!

Phillips failed to even read the case file for six months until right before when the case was suppose to happen. He refused to fight for me when the opposing party was obviously breaking orders and keeping our child from me. He didn't use evidence I submitted to him. He didn't keep regular contact ...with me. He failed to provide a sufficient defense. He didn't look for information on the opposing party. He didn't have text message evidence verified before submitting it. He didn't review, edit or revise declarations I wrote. He copied and pasted email segments from me together and submitted a horrendous looking declaration on my behalf. The commissioner even asked if that's what had happened and he lied and told the court that I had written it that way. He got caught up in arguing nonsense which was obviously a distraction by the opposing attorney to avoid real matters at hand during hearings. He did not argue well in court. It seemed he did not know what he was doing or saying. He refused to ask for revisions or fight questionable decisions made by the court. He did not respond to me in a timely manner when I had questions. He did not send court documents to me in a timely manner. He took my money and when I asked for it back he said yes but then has refused to contact me or send it since. He didn't submit evidence to the joint trial management report. In all I lost the money I paid him, the money I was ordered to pay the opposing party's attorney, all the community debt on credit cards under my name, half of the communityndebt under her name and years of precious time with my daughter that I will never get back. The harm that he has caused is irreparable. I do not recommend Matthew Phillips.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
