Katie McGinley began her law career helping people who were living in Seattle shelters and were confronting legal challenges, often centered around contentious family law issues. With this foundation of guiding people through high conflict matters, she established her own family law practice in Vancouver, Washington. Seeking to offer her clients personalized solutions beyond traditional litigation, she pursued certification as a mediator and collaborative divorce lawyer.
Having gone through a divorce herself, especially as a parent, Katie has a profound understanding of the genuine needs people have during the divorce process. Her experience as a former certified life coach adds another dimension to her skill set, enabling her to excel in active listening, assist individuals in identifying their interests, and offer valuable encouragement.
“I find fulfillment in helping my clients envision a future beyond their current struggles. While divorce is a significant event, I emphasize that it won't define the rest of their lives.”
Katie draws upon her vast legal knowledge and personal journey to offer a holistic approach to her clients. Recognizing that the divorce process is not one-size-fits-all, she tailors her approach based on their circumstances and desired outcome.
Katie enjoys cooking, gardening reading, and spending summer days by the river with her son.

Katie helped me through my divorce.
Katie helped me through my divorce. Her kind, insightful, caring and empathetic way was obviously backed up by extensive training in addition to her legal expertise. She met me right where I was at.
"Katie is a compassionate attorney who advocates for clients with the client's long-term goals in mind for themselves and his/her family. She assists clients using the collaborative divorce process, which many find less stressful and more tailored to the needs of their individual family."
"I have known Katie at least 6 years, probably longer, and she is an upstanding person and attorney. She is well versed in family law litigation and collaborative practice. I have not mediated with her, but with her experience, she could easily assist in addressing the issues and bring the mediation to an appropriate resolution."
"Katherine McGinley is a fantastic lawyer. She is firm, but professional and kind in her approach. She makes a difficult process much easier for her clients."
"Katie brings experience, knowledge, and compassion to all of her cases. As a fellow attorney, Katie provided me with guidance when I first started practicing in Washington after exclusively practicing in Oregon. I found her knowledge of the Washington court system very thorough and she explained the differences between the court systems in a clear and thoughtful manner."
"When I first started working in Washington, I asked Katie McGinley Petersen to walk me through the Washington State forms so I could figure out how they differ from Oregon. She was very thorough and helpful, and explained everything in a clear manner. We have also worked together on multiple cases and her insight is great, she understands what clients need, and she helps guide them in a caring, effective way."
