Mr. Urmston has a B.S. in Civil Engineering and formerly was a Professional Engineer. As an Assistant Attorney General for Washington State, Mr. Urmston represented the state in condemnation and construction matters. In private practice, Mr. Urmston assisted Washington D.C. counsel in representing Lockheed Shipyard in a dispute with the Coast Guard concerning the construction of the Icebreakers Polar Star and Polar Sea. As in-house counsel for Rocket Research and TransEnergy Systems, Mr. Urmston worked with engineers on the feasibility, design and implementation of alternative energy projects, including the development of a 15 MW municipal waste to energy project in Marion County, Oregon. As a project manager with Gershman Brickner and Bratton, Mr. Urmston worked with Snohomish, King and Pierce Counties on the feasibility of waste-to-energy projects. Mr. Urmston worked with Mr. Lewis to represent Petro Star, Inc. against owners of the Trans Alaska Pipeline concerning design defects of the Pipeline. Mr. Urmston has represented owners, contractors and architects in construction and remodeling disputes and has advised architects in copyright matters.
As in-house counsel for Seattle Steel, Inc. (formerly Bethlehem Steel in West Seattle and currently Nucor), Mr. Urmston managed environmental issues and worked with the EPA and the State Department of Ecology to ensure that Bethlehem restored sites at the plant that were subject to CERCLA and MCTA. At Hendricks & Lewis, Mr. Urmston represented Penberthy Electromelt International (PEI), Inc. first in attempting to license a hazardous waste treatment plant under RCRA and then in remediation of the PEI site in South Park under CERCLA and MTCA. Mr. Urmston also obtained insurance coverage for PEI’s site clean up costs. Mr. Urmston represented the owner of Ken’s Radiator to achieve clean up of a hazardous waste site and recovery of clean up costs from the owner’s insurer. In Skykomish, Washington, Mr. Urmston successfully represented the owners of the Homestead Vintage Stove Company in negotiations with Burlington Northern concerning damages resulting from the railroad’s superfund site.
