Michael Helock is a dedicated criminal defense attorney who approaches his work with empathy, patience, and a deep respect for the people he represents. He understands that involvement in the criminal justice system can be one of the most overwhelming experiences a person faces, and he is committed to providing steady guidance and clear communication during moments of uncertainty. His practice reflects a trauma-informed, client-centered philosophy focused on dignity, trust, and meaningful advocacy.
Michael’s professional background is rooted in public defense. Before joining Reynolds Defense Firm, he represented clients in Lane County across a broad range of misdemeanor and felony cases, handling matters from arraignment through resolution. Many of the individuals he worked with faced mental health challenges, and Michael became known for his calm demeanor, attentiveness, and ability to tailor his advocacy to each client’s specific needs. He believes that trust is essential to effective representation and works intentionally to build it from the outset.
In addition to his work in public defense, Michael gained valuable insight into the judicial process through his service as a judicial clerk in the Lane County Circuit Court. That experience provided a practical understanding of how judges evaluate cases, how courtroom dynamics influence outcomes, and which strategies are most effective at each stage of the process.
Michael’s commitment to criminal defense developed early in his career. Prior to law school, he interned with a public defense office in Florida, an experience that solidified his desire to serve individuals facing serious legal challenges. He earned his law degree from the University of Oregon School of Law, where he represented clients through the Criminal Defense Clinic and clerked for Legal Aid Services of Oregon.
Clients appreciate Michael’s grounded presence and his ability to balance strong legal advocacy with compassion and care. He works not only to achieve favorable legal results, but also to ensure that clients feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout their case. Michael believes that a single difficult moment should never define a person’s future, and he takes pride in standing beside clients as they move forward.
Outside of the office, Michael enjoys golfing, photography and videography, cooking, and attending live music events. He plays the guitar and unwinds through skateboarding, snowboarding, and mindfulness practices. He also remains active in the community through volunteer expungement clinics and other legal service initiatives.
