You MAY be able to have the student loan discharged in bankruptcy. Take with a bankruptcy attorney who specializes in student loans. Good luck.

In Oregon you cannot list them as an expense in either Ch.7 or Ch.13.

You might be eligible for a Ch.7, but he is not. Jointly you two MAY be eligible for a Ch.13. Invest in a consultation with an attorney. Good luck.

Yes, there is a big difference between re-affirming a debt and modifying it. But, Ms. Bunce is correct. You do not have to pay taxes on a debt...
