I am a former Hawaii Attorney General who is licensed in Hawaii and California. I have practiced in all courts, federal and state, in Hawaii and California. I have handled two cases in the U.S. Supreme Court - Olim v. Wakinekona, 461 U.S. 238 (1983) and HHA v. Midkill, 467 U.S. 229 (1984)(co-counsel with Larry Tribe).
I also won Hawai‘i Supreme Court cases on wrongful termination, the right to campaign for political office, land reform and open government. After protracted litigation, I obtained an exemption for guide dogs from Hawai‘i’s animal quarantine, for which I was awarded the national Access Partners Award from Guide Dog Users, Inc., the Helen Kinau Wilder Friendship Award from the Hawaiian Humane Society, and the Eye of the Pacific Guide Dogs Foundation’s Mirikitani Recognition Award. I also was awarded the National Society of the DAR’s 1999 Outstanding Community Service Award at an awards ceremony in .
I am a Vietnam War combat veteran. Decorations include the Legion of Merit. I retired as a Naval Reserve Captain after 30 years service. I am married to the former Cindy Walter and have four children.
