Deeply unethical billing practices, negligence, and lack of competence

I retained Eric Mercer in 2025 and paid a $10,000 retainer in good faith, expecting professionalism and honest representation. Unfortunately, my experience was the opposite. After reviewing the invoices and comparing them against the actual work performed, it’s clear that the correct amount for legit...imate services should have been $2,970, not $11,080. Throughout our brief engagement, Mr. Mercer’s conduct reflected dishonesty, overbilling, and a lack of basic case understanding. Below are some of the most concerning examples, all documented by billing records and court filings: Unauthorized Charge: Mr. Mercer charged my credit card $640 before I had even signed a contract with him (contract signed July 2, 2025). Negligent Court Appearance: He appeared late and unprepared for my July 2 hearing, forcing me to check in on my own. He had left crucial documents at his office but still billed $3,400 for this brief, 15-minute, mishandled appearance. Inflated and Fabricated Billing: Multiple charges appeared for “document preparation” and “legal research” when no hearings or filings were pending, including July 11, 2025. During this same period, Mr. Mercer admitted that my case was “not a priority.” He went dark on me for over two weeks. Not accepting or returning phone calls. Stating he was "in trial" or "sick." Improper and Unrelated Charges: On July 14, 2025, he billed $680 for a call with another attorney to gossip about opposing counsel’s license status — an unprofessional and unauthorized use of my funds. Billing for His Own Mistakes: He charged $1,020 total to refile motions that had been rejected twice because of his own filing errors (entries dated July 30 and August 1, 2025). Lack of Case Knowledge: After billing over $10,800, he admitted he was unaware that my matter involved two separate cases and didn’t even know that the opposing party and I were never married — information clearly stated in the documents I had provided. Mr. Mercer’s lack of preparation and inflated billing practices caused significant delays and personal hardship, including the loss of valuable time with my children. His actions fell far below the ethical and professional standards expected of a licensed attorney. I have retained documentation supporting all of these claims, including invoices, rejected filings, and correspondence. In my experience, Eric Mercer used his law license to overcharge and mislead a client who trusted him. I strongly urge anyone considering his services to demand detailed, itemized billing in writing and to verify every charge carefully. This review is based entirely on factual records and first-hand experience. I share it to help other clients avoid the same costly mistake.

Misleading, Overpriced, and Unresponsive

I hired Eric for a family law issue after a free consultation that seemed promising. He came across as knowledgeable and approachable, but that changed fast once I signed the retainer. Communication dropped off almost immediately. It was hard to get timely responses, and when he did reply, it felt... rushed or vague. Despite only a handful of emails and one short phone call, I ended up with a bloated invoice that made no sense. It felt like he was milking the retainer instead of actually helping. Eric will offer a free consultation, but don’t mistake that for integrity or value. I walked away frustrated, out of pocket, and disappointed I ever hired him. Be cautious.

Disappointing Experience with Eric – Poor Communication & Inflated Billing

I really regret hiring Eric. After minimal contact, just a few emails and one phone call, I got hit with a massive bill. When I followed up about it, Eric acknowledged he only had about 4 to 5 hours into the case, but the invoice told a completely different story. He billed for everything, includi...ng documents I never received, and was slow to respond throughout. It felt like he was draining the retainer without delivering much in return. What’s worse is that a key part of the case turned out to be weak, something he didn’t bring up until later. If he had been honest about that from the start, I could have avoided a lot of unnecessary costs. I walked away from this feeling taken advantage of. Be careful if you decide to work with him.

Excellent Real Estate Attorney - Thank you

Yes, I would certainly recommend Mr. Mercer for legal service; and I have. After my lender denied my loan modification, I was lost and in fear of losing my house. Mr. Mercer has successfully helped many borrowers as myself in a difficult hardship situation and so what better person to go to than so...meone that has proof. For the average person who pays a monthly mortgage, losing a job can be very devastating. That is exactly what happened to me. Although I was fortunate to find another job, my new salary was less than my previous job, which made it very difficult for me to meet my mortgage payments. My financial hardship is one of the criteria’s to qualify for a loan modification so I applied with my lender. After a 3 month process of miss guided information, my loan modification was denied by my lender. Refusing to accept losing my home as an option, I decided to seek alternative options. I came across many counsel services soliciting their guarantee to help but when I called, the people I spoke to were telemarketers with a serious sales pitch. This is when I spoke to my cousin who was successful in modifying his loan and referred me to a lawyer in Sacramento by the name of Eric Andrew Mercer. I called Mr. Mercer, scheduled to meet in person, and the rest was history. During our initial consultation, Mr. Mercer was very clear and concise with the task in hand and the next series of events that is about to unfold. Throughout the whole litigation process, all mortgage payments were seized and most importantly, the end result was everything we hoped for and more. Mr. Mercer successfully modified our loan with a staggering new APR rate of 2%; not only that, about 1/3rd of the total principal was reduced. My family and I are very pleased with Mr. Mercer for saving our home and we cannot thank him enough for his services.
