You don't necessarily need a tax lawyer, but you may need help. A good local CPA could work. A tax lawyer could as well. Good luck.

These are common scams. The best you can do is call your local police... often they will contact the local newspaper to try and get the word out...

You are still getting paid, except in ownership and not cash. That is still illegal.
And volunteering, if it is productive work, is no different...
