Cash the check without putting it through your bank account, so that they do not get your account number. If Good funds, you are good to go.

Talk to the bank manager. They have ability to waive fees. Findout what the polic is, so you know in the future.

News reports can't quote legal fees. Every attorney charges differently depending on experience, location, overhead, etc. Find someone good.
