You need to enter on an H-1B visa based on the approval or file for change of status as you currently hold B status which does not authorize...

You need to keep the I-94 as evidence of your immigration status. The employer does not need it.

That would be fine as long as the employer still intends to hire you permanently at the time your green card will be issued and you start working...
