You can open it and make a copy- it does not have to be sealed. I am assuming since your friend gave the letter he has no problem with you knowing...

I agree you will need to prove your place and date of birth. The BC is the best document for that.

You can be a sponsor in the financial sense (a cosponsor or joint sponsor) but you CANNOT petition for the child unless the child id yours.
