My H1B expired around mid 2012 and i did file for renewal in timely manner,can i travel on a cruise such as to Bahamas ??

Speak to the employer's attorney who filed the H1 and extension - you cannot come back with an expired I94 and visa.

It will probably be an issue since you generally need to show current employment if you are not qualified in terms of assets.
