I had filed for my Green Card in July of 2007. I received my EAD in December 2011and since them we have been renewing our EAD.

You seem to qualify for CAP GAP OPT work benefit. Your DSO should have extended your work status until Sept 30.

You need a valid H-1B or EAD to be authorized to work. If the GC is through USC spouse, working without authorization will not affect the AOS...
