Sarah Marie Shields

Sarah Shields is of counsel with Betts Patterson Mines, where she advises and defends insurers in first and third party coverage, environmental issues, mass torts and bad faith matters.

Ms. Shields has extensive experience with research and writing in insurance coverage and appellate practice, with a specialty in legal theory and litigation strategy. Her previous experience includes brokering the largest asbestos insurance settlement in the country, as well as numerous nationwide appeals involving jurisdictional issues, insurance coverage, bad faith, mass torts and product liability. Ms. Shields assisted in the management of San Francisco’s Coordinated Asbestos Insurance Coverage Cases and settled over 150,000 individual asbestos bodily injury claims. She briefed and argued through the District Court and the Ninth Circuit a case involving $400 million in punitive damages.
