I agree with Mr. Sarno, it sounds like you may have been declared in default and that the "subpoena" was actually a summons you needed to answer.

In most cases they will just get a bill, but make no mistake the IRS and State Tax Board can cause trouble up to and including in a few cases prison.

I think it is possible you have a cause of action against ATT. If you had a Yellow Pages contract and they did not honor it, there can be damages....
