you are in a period of stay authorized by the Attorney General. You absolutely should apply for the work and travel permits -- no cost, why not.

you should also file I-131 for advance parole. Total fee is $1225 for adult or $750 for child under 14 filing with the adult.

Unfortunately no as you can't say you are eligible to accept other employment. As you know the H-1b is employer-specific.
