Yes, this is done all the time. If possible bring a letter showing he is deployed.

As long as this position is not one that the orphanage would normally pay and your wife will not receive any compensation, then volunteering should...

The Labor Department mandates certain expenses to be paid only by the employer. I would not recommend going through this process by yourself.

if your adjustment (I-485) is approved you should be getting the permanent resident card in the mail shortly.

To get a work permit you would need to file a new I-130 and I-485 with I-765.
