Your travel abroad will not stop the processing of the extension, but you will need a valid consular visa stamp on your passport to be readmitted.

In my opinion if your I-94 wasn't requested and kept by the officer during the interview, you are still not approved and an RFE could be issued...

Yes, those 6 days would count as "unemployment"..
