do not use Mr. Schechter

After the conclusion of a mediated marital settlement agreement, my ex and I agreed to use attorney Schechter to divide our two pensions and other retirement accounts. I expected Mr. Schechter to be efficient and accurate in doing these tasks because he represented himself to specialize in these are...as, but my experience with him was terrible. First, he did not prepare the appropriate domestic relations orders correctly, causing each retirement entity to reject documents several times before the documents were correct, which caused the whole process to take more than two years, adding to the stress of the divorce. In addition, the documents had serious mistakes adverse to me, including a mistake that did not credit me for for time I worked for the state before marriage and after date of separation, which, if I had not caught the mistake, would have deprived me of my separate property portion of my hard-earned pension. Second, although he represented me and my ex jointly, at the request of my ex, Mr. Schechter opined on tax issues that he was not retained for, and he gave incorrect information adverse to me (a client) that caused my ex to place a "stop payment" on a check I was entitled to under the terms of the MSA. This constituted malpractice and caused me to have to spend several thousands of dollars in attorney's fees to have my divorce lawyer contact Mr. Schechter and correct the bad advice. Even though ultimately I recouped the money, my ex's action affected my credit and caused much emotional and financial agony for me. I considered filing a complaint with the state bar association against Mr. Schechter but have decided to forego such action.

Avvo Rating

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. What determines Avvo Rating?
  • Experience & background Years licensed, work experience, education
  • Legal community recognition Peer endorsements, associations, awards
  • Legal thought leadership Publications, speaking engagements
  • Discipline Disciplinary information may not be comprehensive, or updated. We recommend that you always check a lawyer's disciplinary status with their respective state bar association before hiring them.
