Inexperience Attorney: Broken Promises, Lack of Effort, and Costly Mistakes

I worked with this attorney on two cases, both of which we ultimately lost. He initially promised to handle the appeals for me, but he failed to keep that promise. Throughout the cases, I felt that he did not put in sufficient effort to advocate on my behalf. For instance, he was aware that the oppos...ing attorney had submitted fraudulent evidence. However, during the trial, he neither brought this issue to the judge’s attention nor challenged the authenticity of the evidence. As a result, I am now left dealing with the aftermath of these cases. In one of my unlawful detainer (UD) cases, I specifically advised him beforehand that we should not request more than 12 months' rent, based on advice from other legal professionals. Despite this, he insisted on filing a UD case asking for 13 months' rent. After we lost the case, he charged me additional fees to contest the attorney’s fees. Moreover, he was aware that one of the judges was biased against us, yet he insisted on proceeding with that judge. Not only did his approach fail to reduce the attorney’s fee award, but it also resulted in an even higher fee being imposed. Before the attorney fee motion, he also refused to submit my declaration, claiming that I could not file it on my own while he was representing me. Overall, it seemed that his primary interest was in obtaining quick payment rather than ensuring a favorable outcome for his client. His handling of my case revealed a lack of experience in UD matters, as evidenced by basic and avoidable mistakes.

Our Rating is calculated using information the lawyer has included on their profile in addition to the information we collect from state bar associations and other organizations that license legal professionals. Attorneys who claim their profiles and provide Avvo with more information tend to have a higher rating than those who do not.

What determines Avvo Rating?
