Disappointing Experience: Judgmental Comments, Blurred Professional Boundaries, and Lack of Client-Centered Advocacy

My experience with attorney Joe Langlois was deeply disappointing. I hired him to represent me during an emotionally difficult divorce, expecting professional guidance, respect for my autonomy, and advocacy centered on my legal interests. Instead, I frequently felt judged, pressured, blamed, and ulti...mately abandoned as a client. Throughout our attorney-client relationship, Mr. Langlois made personal, judgmental, and critical comments about my marriage, my former husband, and my character and decisions. He repeatedly encouraged me to move on, find someone better, and pursue as much money as possible. When I expressed that I needed time to process the end of a long marriage and make thoughtful decisions, I felt that my perspective was dismissed rather than respected. He even questioned whether I was "on the wrong team," which I found inappropriate and unnecessarily confrontational. I was also uncomfortable with what I perceived as blurred professional boundaries. During our early meetings, he suggested that I move next door to him in Thousand Oaks. On the morning of my first deposition, his assistant called me repeatedly to check on me, and he also invited me to lunch. When I mentioned having lunch with my husband, he responded, "He's not gonna be your husband much anymore." His wife, Sandy, worked in the same office, which made these interactions feel particularly uncomfortable to me. I perceived some of his comments and behavior as flirtatious. Regardless of his intentions, I felt that these interactions crossed appropriate professional boundaries between an attorney and a client. Rather than feeling supported, I often felt that he wanted to dictate the direction of my divorce and criticized me when my decisions differed from his recommendations. I experienced his communication style as controlling, judgmental, and lacking empathy. When disagreements arose, I often felt that responsibility was placed on me rather than concerns being addressed collaboratively. I also became concerned about meetings and communications that did not appear necessary to advance my case but nevertheless contributed to my legal expenses. The most troubling experience occurred when I requested additional time before finalizing the divorce judgment. Instead of working collaboratively with me to explore my options, he repeatedly expressed concern about being sanctioned. He ultimately terminated his representation, attributing the difficulties to my alleged lack of cooperation. From my perspective, I was simply asking for more time to consider decisions with significant legal, financial, and personal consequences. I understand that attorneys must exercise independent professional judgment, meet court deadlines, and sometimes disagree with their clients. However, I believe clients also deserve respectful communication, clear explanations, appropriate professional boundaries, and a meaningful voice in decisions affecting their lives. Unfortunately, I did not feel that Mr. Langlois provided that kind of representation. My experience left me feeling criticized rather than understood, pressured rather than guided, and unsupported when I needed legal counsel most. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend Joe Langlois to anyone seeking a respectful, compassionate, and genuinely client-centered family law attorney.

We understand that going through a divorce can be an emotional and difficult process. We strongly disagree with the allegations in this review, which do not accurately reflect the professional relationships we have with our clients. We take our ethical obligations, professional boundaries, and responsibility to our clients seriously. Our advice is intended to protect clients’ legal interests, and discussions about difficult decisions, court deadlines, and potential consequences should not be misconstrued as personal criticism, pressure, or misconduct. Decisions regarding a divorce can be complex, and discussions over legal strategy or timing do not mean a client’s concerns are disregarded. Any decision to withdraw from representation must be handled in accordance with applicable professional obligations. Since we are unaware as to who is providing this review, we welcome the reviewer to contact our office directly so that any concerns can be addressed appropriately.
