It all depends on how you entered the US. If you illegally entered you will have to go out of the US to process your green card.
I have a green card issued in 1980-81 with no expiration date do I need to renew to go to Canada and back.

You need to legally file a petition and have your partner wait there while processing, assuming he was not deported.

Not true. Her marriage certificate changes her name in the US.
