You can check the asylum clock for EAD by contacting the USCIS and/or immigration court, depending on where your case is pending.

1-2 weeks gap between the date of the H-1B approval notice and the date you start work to allow time to move etc. might not be a big problem, but...

If your change of status to F-1 is not approved, a change of status to H-1B will also not be approved. Be careful and hire an attorney.
