Most likely you have been deferred or paroled in to the US for a removal proceeding, which means that you may contest abandonment in US immigration...

I would not recommend any foreign travel until the criminal case is resolved.

Your wife does not control whether you can keep your green card, however, she may be in a position to make problems for you with the USCIS. ...

No, you should not need a new visa in your passport if you have adequate documentation for the change and maintenance of status.

The school could issue a new DS 2019, however, the USCIS may or may not validate any change or extension of J-1 status for you.
If we abandon our I485 AOS, leave the US and immediately apply for a I130 abroad, will there be any issues processing it?

It should not take a year or more to undergo the adjustment of status process. Speak to a different attorney.
