Julia Cheng

Julia Cheng is a business and technology IP attorney specializing in corporate, software, artificial intelligence (AI), data privacy (GDPR & CCPA), digital media and IP matters. For more than 15 years, Julia works with startups and seasoned companies through the life cycle of a business, from entity formation to capital raise (accelerators, angels and VC), product and business development, to negotiating partnership deals at Fortune 500 companies including Apple, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, IBM, Disney, CNN, Paramount Global, GE and Samsung. For her technology clients Julia routinely drafts and negotiates contracts relating to the development, licensing and distribution of software, advises clients on GDPR and CCPA compliance, and counsels clients on legal issues surrounding the commercialization and use of AI applications. For her digital media clients Julia advises them on matters related to the development, publishing and distribution of digital content, social media advertising, copyright and trademark protection, and IP issues surrounding AI generated content.

Julia earned a Harvard Law School Executive Education certificate in computer science. Prior to starting CyberlawStudio, Julia practiced corporate law at the Wall Street law firm of Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft and served as the general counsel of a wireless technology entertainment startup. Julia grew up in Japan and Taiwan (18 years) and is a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese (read and write), majored in pre-medicine/psychology at the Johns Hopkins University and studied electronic music production at Juilliard School of Music.

Julia is the co-founder and President of Out in Tech, the largest LGBTQ+ tech nonprofit with 32 chapters serving 50,000+ members worldwide.

Julia is admitted to practice in New York and California.
