Corey Field's legal practice combines entertainment industry deal making with rigorous copyright and trademark skills on behalf of his clients, some of the leading businesses and individuals in the entertainment, media, and arts industries.
Among the clients Mr. Field has represented in entertainment and intellectual property matters are a broad range of companies, producers, and individuals in music, film, television, Internet, publishing, electronic games, and live performance from opera and ballet to Las Vegas resorts. He also represents visual arts clients, celebrities (including leading actors and athletes), talent agencies, publicists, and managers.
Mr. Field's practice includes not only deal making and licensing, but copyright and trademark filings, registrations, and brand development, including copyright management strategies such as termination of copyrights for authors and their estates. He is especially sought after for growth- and enterprise-building creative projects, including film and media financing, major publishing and acquisition agreements, television and music production, and other creative projects that need both legal and business experience and leadership on behalf of his clients.
While his practice is primarily transactional, Mr. Field is also a litigator who has argued complex copyright issues before a circuit court of appeal. Among his high-profile clients are The Sundance Film Festival; NBCUniversal Media, LLC; Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI); the estate of Mother Teresa of Calcutta; the Jabbawockeez; Pulitzer Prize-winning composers; and an elite niche representing orchestras, opera and ballet companies, ensembles, composers, performers, agents, managers, and others in the worldwide classical music industry.
Prior to his legal career, Mr. Field had an unusual background successfully working in the entertainment industry as an executive in the international music-publishing business, using his experience as a former composer and musician (he holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition) as a springboard for developing business strategies and managing accounting, royalties, negotiation, promotion, and catalog acquisition— all based on a unique understanding of what's important to both the creative and financial segments of the arts. He also brings that seasoned executive mindset to his work as an attorney on behalf of his clients.
Mr. Field is also a scholar of entertainment and IP law, as the Principal Author of the legal treatise "Entertainment Law: Forms and Analysis," published by Law Journal Press, New York, which he updates twice annually. Much in demand for his leadership in the legal and arts worlds, Mr. Field is a past President of The Copyright Society of the U.S.A., the world's preeminent copyright law organization. He currently serves as a Trustee of the BMI Foundation Inc.; the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc.; and the Marlboro Music School and Festival, and as a member of the Grammy Foundation's Entertainment Law Initiative Advisory Committee. He formerly served as Treasurer of the American Music Center (New York), as a Governor of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Recording Academy, and as a board member of the Music Publishers' Association of the United States.
Mr. Field has been widely published in scholarly journals and media-industry publications on the subjects of copyright, entertainment, media, and advertising law, and has also been a guest commentator on television programs. He is the editor and author of several published and recorded musical compositions and arrangements. He teaches a course in the Entertainment Studies Department at UCLA Extension titled "Copyright Law in the Entertainment Industry."
Mr. Field is a member of the California, New York, and Pennsylvania bars. Born in Los Angeles, he holds a B.A. in music from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a D.Phil (Ph.D.) in music composition from the University of York, England, and, while working in the music publishing industry on the East Coast, attended Widener University School of Law, graduating cum laude.
