Leland Eugene Backus

Leland Eugene Backus is a graduate of the UCLA School of Law and has been counsel in some of the largest complex cases in the country, including the MGM Grand Hotel fire litigation, DuPont Plaza Hotel Fire litigation, the PEPCON plant explosion, bone screw litigation, tobacco litigation, yellow brass fitting litigation, Venetian Resort construction litigation, and CityCenter Harmon Tower construction and lien master litigation.   Mr. Backus is a Fellow in the trial lawyer honorary society of Litigation Counsel of America and the Order of Justitia honorary trial order.  He is a founding member and Director of Eagle International Associates.  Mr. Backus is a founding shareholder of Backus, Carranza & Burden rated by Martindale Hubbell as a Preeminent Law Firm with the highest rating of AV.  He has been recognized as a Superlawyer, Top Lawyer and his firm as one of the Best Law Firms in Nevada by U. S. News & World Report.  Mr. Backus is also an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association for construction and commercial disputes.  He practices in the areas of complex commercial litigation, professional liability, construction, hotel/casino, complex and insurance litigation, health care law and international law.  Mr. Backus has been an author for the Nevada Civil Practice Manual, Defense Law Journal, ABA Forum on the Construction Industry, and has authored several articles in the field of litigation. He has lectured and engaged in mock trials on an international basis on a variety of topics pertaining to mass disaster litigation, computer use in litigation, litigation practice, construction law, claims presentation, evidence, insurance law, pharmaceutical and medical device litigation and a variety of litigation and procedural areas of law. Mr. Backus was a trustee and past chairman of the Nevada Law Foundation; past chairman of Big Brothers and Big Sisters; a past director of The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee; a past charter president of the Exchange Club of Las Vegas; former chairman of the State of Nevada Certified Court Reporters Board, and is presently Secretary, Chairman and Director of Send Me On Vacation, Inc., a nonprofit charity that sends breast cancer survivors on vacation following treatment.
