I hired Dan Shumway to handle my divorce case last November. He sometimes went over a month without returning any of my phone calls or emails. He would make horrid small talk for most of the time that I met with him and then charge me for every minute. Dan did not keep me well-informed - because I do...n't feel that he, himself, is very knowledgable. He showed up 25 minutes late to my mediation meeting without all of my paperwork and then proceeded to allow my ex-husband's attorney to banter back and forth without saying anything. I then became my own unofficial representative in the meeting trying to stick up for myself and inform the persons in the room about the facts in my case. However, because my attorney (Dan) was unprepared with my evidence and paperwork the entire meeting was a waste. He scheduled this mediation meeting unnecessarily and proceeded to tell me afterwards that I was rude and that "I should be happy to be paying him instead of my ex-husband." Needless to say, I fired Dan from my case after 5 long and dreadful months. I hired a different attorney that was a complete 180 and wonderful. I would NEVER wish such an awful attorney on my worst enemy. Spend a little bit more money on your retainer fee to get a GOOD attorney who will actually work for you.
